Washburn originated as a collaboration between George Washburn Lyon and Patrick Healy before the Civil War. Washburn has been making stringed instruments since 1883, when it was founded in Chicago, Illinois. Washburn is an American institution, having created guitars, mandolins, banjos, ukuleles, and more over the years. Washburn has been performed by many of the biggest names in folk, rock, and blues, as well as some of the most significant trendsetting songs. Washburn has been a favorite among the song-smiths of the day, from the early blues through the inspiration for the MTV Unplugged resurgence to the present day.
Chicago, 1883. With the first Washburn stringed instruments, George Washburn begins a history of greatness, delivering superb instruments to home musicians at a reasonable price. Washburn becomes America's largest mandolin manufacturer in 1889. Washburn continues to lead with high-quality guitars, banjos, and mandolins in the early twentieth century. Washburn introduces the Lakeside Jumbo, the first dreadnought guitar, in 1912. Washburn and Tonk Brothers join up in 1930 to manufacture the Solo Deluxe, the forerunner of the auditorium type guitar and one of the best-selling guitars ever made.
