Handbook Contents & Exam Structure

The exam is divided into three main sections, totaling 100 marks:

1. Recital (60 Marks)

Select and perform three pieces (20 marks each) from the handbook repertoire. Free-choice pieces may also be approved (up to three). Examples include:

• Classical Favorites: Dvořák – Sonatina in G, Op. 100 (Larghetto); Elgar – Salut d’Amour; Händel – Sonata in D Major (HWV 371, Allegro); Seitz – Concerto in D Major, Op. 22 (Allegro Moderato); Kreutzer – Étude No. 2; Barbara Arens – Tango Habanera.
• Contemporary/Popular: Händel – Sonata HWV 373 in E Major (Allegro); Kreisler – Tempo di Minuetto; Louis Armstrong – What a Wonderful World; Gershwin – Summertime.
• World Music: Tico-Tico no Fubá.

2. Technical (25 Marks)

Candidates may choose one of two approaches:

• Option 1: Perform all required technical exercises plus scales from memory.
• Option 2: Perform technical exercises plus an approved alternative to scales from memory.

Scales & Arpeggios (3 octaves, from memory): G harmonic minor, B♭ melodic minor; Arpeggios in B♭ major, G minor, and B♭ minor. Additional technical patterns include chromatic scales, diminished 7ths, and rhythmic bowing challenges.

Technical Exercises: Advanced bowing patterns, double-stops, and Sevcik-style studies to refine precision and control.

3. Musicianship (15 Marks)

• Option 1: Reading skills (rhythmic clapping tasks) plus listening skills (aural singing/recognition).
• Option 2: Reading skills plus a duet performance from the handbook.
